ABOUT ABOUT

Embodied Excellence is a half-day workshop presented by Center for Architecture & Design to help designers translate their passion for sustainable design into their interactions with clients, firm leaders, and team colleagues. This workshop is aimed at a multi-discipline audience of professional designers, as represented by the 7 design organizations that comprise the Center.

We are aiming for a small group of <40 attendees. Much of the content will focus on reducing carbon as a pathway to more sustainable design/projects.

The workshop format includes an intro session with a panel of local designer professionals, followed by break-out sessions at tables, each with a topic and a facilitator.

The 4 lenses for reducing or eliminating embodied carbon are taken from American Institute of Architects’ design excellence framework of 10 principles:

  • Social Equity
  • Carbon Neutrality
  • Health/Wellness
  • Resilience

Our panelists and table facilitators include:

  1. Christina Hoxie, Hoxie Collective (panel moderator and table facilitator)
  2. Lara Isch, City of KCMO
  3. Scott Gibson, AIA, Populous
  4. Jeremy Knoll, AIA, BNIM
  5. Philippa Cross, Barkley
  6. Erika Winters-Downey, S.E., McCownGordon Construction
  7. Triveece Penelton, Vireo
  8. Joined by workshop committee members:  Katie Allen, Sam De Jong, Ashley Eusey, Gretchen Holy, Heather Stewart, Ashley Tebbe,

Our panelists and table leaders are passionate about sustainability and reducing or eliminating carbon, so much so that they want to be agents of change. Our presenters will have compelling stories to tell about designing for successful sustainable outcomes.

We want this workshop to inspire and push this group of architects and designers to initiate change or act on what they’ve learned once they leave the workshop. We want people to say, “Hey, I have the tools to be a champion for sustainable design in my firm and with my clients!”

Cost: Members*: $40; Non-Members: $50

*If you are a member of AIA Kansas City, AIGA-KC, IDSA, IIDA-MA, KC APA, PGASLA, or SEGD, good news . . . you are already a member of CfAD.

Vaccination & Mask Requirement
This is an in-person event. Attendees will be required to show proof of vaccination, along with proof of identification. We will limit access to those who have either had a full primary dose of the vaccine in addition to the most recent booster shot OR have received their full primary vaccination within the past 6 months (thus rendering them ineligible for the booster until more time has passed).

CfAD will also require masks be worn for all indoor events and for outdoor events where adequate social distancing is not possible.

We will monitor local mandates and recommendations and apply them where required at our various events. Updates to these attendance requirements could be made up to 24 hours in advance of the event starting time.
